Solo Exhibition of painter Anne Wölk at Casa Cultura

For the first time, Portugal hosts an exhibition by an award-winning German artist
For the first time in Portugal, renowned German artist Anne Wölk will present
her exhibition „The island of stars we call home“ at Casa de Cultura Jaime Lobo
e Silva, Ericeira, from June 15 to July 14, 2024. Internationally renowned,
Wölk has exhibited in places such as Spain, Great Britain, South Korea and
the United States.
Nature and Technology in Art
With works that blend nature and technology, the exhibition includes series such
as Nebula, Planet Spheres and Extraterrestrial Horizons. Using techniques from
the old masters and digital culture, Anne creates multidisciplinary paintings that
question our relationship with the universe. She explores contrasts between
outer space and human colonizing and scientific activities, using oils, graphite
and acrylics on three-dimensional spheres.
„Although my approach to compositions stems from Romanticism and
Photorealism, I subvert these traditional methods of landscape painting through
conceptual representations of light and fluid color gradients that allude to
digital photographic media that capture popular images of space; my works
depict photographic aberrations, digital information gaps and compression
artifacts caused by the technical limitations of telescopic observations and
mechanical photography,“ she explains.
Urban exploration
One of the series stands out for its urban exploration of abandoned spaces
in Eastern Europe, reflecting the contemporary trend of documenting forgotten
places and their histories. Anne seeks to capture ephemeral nature and
memory, questioning architectural legacy and the essence of time and place.
„Through painting, the viewer can catch a glimpse of the ephemeral nature and
memory of ourselves and our surroundings and preserve them before they are
lost in time and space. The artworks raise the question: What do architectural
legacies convey about society when we let them drift away?
What is the essence of time and place?“ says the artist.
The exhibition is curated by Eunice Mestre & Pedro Ramos.
About the artist
Anne Wölk, born in 1982 in Jena, Germany, is a figurative painter influenced
by contemporary realists Vija Celmins and Russel Crotty. Her paintings, which
predominantly depict the night sky with galaxies, reflect a multicultural fusion of German, Baltic, and American elements, resulting from her intense interaction
with international artists. Internationally recognized, Wölk has won a category
award for painting in the art competition ‚Art Takes Paris‘ in 2013 and
a scholarship award from Stiftung Kunstfonds in 2022. She also took part in the
finalists‘ exhibition of the Art Revolution competition

Pela primeira vez, Portugal acolhe uma exposição de uma artista alemã
premiada
Pela primeira vez em Portugal, a conceituada artista alemã Anne Wölk vai
apresentar a sua exposição “The island of stars we call home”
(A ilha de estrelas a que chamamos casa) na Casa de Cultura Jaime Lobo e
Silva, na Ericeira, de 15 de junho a 14 de julho de 2024.
Reconhecida internacionalmente, Wölk já expôs em locais como Espanha,
Grã Bretanha, Coreia do Sul e Estados Unidos.
Natureza e Tecnologia na Arte
Com obras que misturam natureza e tecnologia, a exposição inclui séries como
Nebula (Nebulosa), Planet Spheres (Esferas planetárias) e Extraterrestrial
Horizons (Horizontes Extraterrestres). Utilizando técnicas dos antigos mestres
e da cultura digital, Anne cria pinturas multidisciplinares que questionam a
nossa relação com o universo. Explora os contrastes entre o espaço exterior e
as actividades humanas de colonização e científicas, utilizando óleos, grafite e
acrílicos em esferas tridimensionais.
„Embora a minha abordagem às composições tenha origem no Romantismo e
no Fotorrealismo, subverto estes métodos tradicionais de pintura de paisagens
através de representações conceptuais de luz e gradientes de cor fluidos que
aludem aos meios fotográficos digitais que captam imagens populares do espaço;
as minhas obras retratam aberrações fotográficas, lacunas de informação
digital e artefactos de compressão causados pelas limitações técnicas das
observações telescópicas e da fotografia mecânica“, explica.
Exploração urbana
Uma das séries destaca-se pela sua exploração urbana de espaços abandonados
no Leste Europeu, reflectindo a tendência contemporânea de documentar
lugares esquecidos e as suas histórias. Anne procura captar a natureza efémera
e a memória, questionando o legado arquitetónico e a essência do tempo e
do lugar.
„Através da pintura, o espetador pode vislumbrar a natureza efémera e a memória
de nós próprios e do que nos rodeia e preservá-las antes que se percam
no tempo e no espaço. As obras de arte levantam a questão: O que é que os
legados arquitectónicos transmitem sobre a sociedade quando os deixamos
desaparecer? Qual é a essência do tempo e do lugar?“, diz a artista.
A exposição tem curadoria de Pedro Ramos.
Sobre a artista
Anne Wölk, nascida em 1982 em Jena, Alemanha, é uma pintora figurativa
influenciada pelos realistas contemporâneos Vija Celmins e Russel Crotty. As
suas pinturas, que retratam predominantemente o céu noturno com galáxias,
reflectem uma fusão multicultural de elementos alemães, bálticos, russos e
americanos, resultado da sua intensa interação com artistas dos EUA. Reconhecida
internacionalmente, Wölk ganhou um prêmio de categoria de pintura no
concurso de arte ‚Art Takes Paris‘ em 2013 e uma bolsa de estudos da Stiftung
Kunstfonds em 2022. Participou também na exposição dos finalistas do
concurso Art Revolution em Taipei. Atualmente, vive e trabalha em Berlim.
